Endodontics

What is a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is popularly known as the "devitalisation" of a tooth. It consists of cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system inside the teeth in situations where the pulp (set of vessels and nerves) has suffed an irreversible injury.

There are many causes that may require root canal treatment, the most known are tooth decay, traumas, teeth damaged by bruxism, cracks and gum infections.

Irreversible damage of the pulp can sometimes cause severe pain, infections and even abscesses on the face and neck. The root canal treatment is the most conservative theraphy for these infections which originate in the teeth. Only after a proper identification, cleaning and disinfection of contaminated root canals we can enable the healing and preservation of the tooth.

How do we do it?

We can certainly say that one of the most complex treatments in dentistry is represented by endodontics because of the difficulty of the complex internal anatomy of teeth and its difficult access. In order to ensure the best treatment possible we use different magnification systems, including a sophisticated operating microscope. The application of the microscope has represented a great revolution in the world of endodontics. It has brought a remarkable improvement in the tooth and its root canal system visualization, which allows us to work very precisely improving the prognosis of our treatment.

Sometimes deep tooth decay has not caused irreversible damage to the pulp as a consequence, which allows us to apply modern biomaterials inside the tooth that stimulate the repair and the pulp protection by itself. This treatment represents the main exponent in conservative and regenerative dentistry since it is possible to preserve the vitality of the tooth before tooth decay affects the pulp.
